My last gig in Oakland before I move to the desert

Described by our leader Suki O'Kane:

1pm | sun 8 dec

redline redefined: willow and grist

dresher ensemble studio

2201 poplar | oak

$FREE | ADV TIX

From 2020 to 2022, I created five graphic scores for Redline Redefined, Thingamajigs' commissioning project that catalyzes artist investigations of East Bay historic (and current) redlining.

The scores were briefly available to perform at the five sites that inspired them, if you knew to look for an unusual real estate sign, and now they are emerging as small films for various ensembles.

At this matinee launch party for Zachary James Watkins (commissioned in the second cohort of Redline Redefined artists) I'll be showing two films: WILLOW and GRIST live scored by

Steve Adams

Rob Ewing

Jason Levis

Kevin CK Lo

Lisa Mezzacappa

Kjell Nordeson

Erika Oba

David Slusser

Polly Springhorn

Self, on that bass drum as tabula rasa

I'm in the Astrolabe ensemble show at Temescal Arts Center on 11/10.

I'm excited to play a second iteration of Astrolabe, the new avant-jazz suite by Nathan Clevenger. It's actually the third iteration, but I wasn't able to join that performance in July; I was too booked up!

Nathan was just awarded an MGP grant from InterMusic SF for recording Astrolabe in 2025. I will be thrilled, THRILLED I SAY, to be a part of that as well.

The show will be at Temescal Arts Center in Oakland, at 7:00 PM. Admission is sliding scale from $20 to whatever astronomical sum you may be comfortable with (cash or Venmo accepted at the door).

Dramatis personae:

KASEY KNUDSEN: alto & tenor sax

BETH SCHENCK: alto & soprano sax

CORY WRIGHT: Bb & bass clarinets, alto flute

The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness

The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness

Which animals have the capacity for conscious experience? While much uncertainty remains, some points of wide agreement have emerged.

First, there is strong scientific support for attributions of conscious experience to other mammals and to birds.

Second, the empirical evidence indicates at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience in all vertebrates (including reptiles, amphibians, and fishes) and many invertebrates (including, at minimum, cephalopod mollusks, decapod crustaceans, and insects).

Third, when there is a realistic possibility of conscious experience in an animal, it is irresponsible to ignore that possibility in decisions affecting that animal. We should consider welfare risks and use the evidence to inform our responses to these risks.
